The Unknown Jambor, an exhibition commemorating the 130th anniversary of the painter’s birth, Josef Jambor Gallery in Tišnov, 2018
The mission of the Josef Jambor Friends (SPJJ), founded in 2016, is to preserve and promote the work of painter Josef Jambor, who devoted most of his life to Czech landscape painting and achieved artistic qualities comparable to the most prominent Czech and foreign artists whose artistic credo was to catch the genius loci of a certain geographically significant landscape site. Jambor’s painterly mastery focuses on expressing specific colour harmonies and characteristic natural landscapes sceneries, generally related to the picturesque character and unique appearance of the Czech countryside. His work reached a classical form and stands at the top of Czech landscape painting of the first half of the twentieth century, which started at the end of the 19th century by Mařák’s Landscape School and its efforts to catch the national character of Czech landscape. The visual quality of Jambor's work ranks it among permanent spiritual values of this country; it is represented in a number of public galleries and private collections and constitutes a part of the national cultural heritage.
The aim of the association is to research archive sources and to elaborate a catalogue raisonné with photographic documentation of Josef Jambor’s extensive work, represented in public institutions and private collections, to produce a digital archive of Jambor's works and archive sources, to make Jambors's artistic legacy accessible to the general public in the national as well as international contexts through exhibitions, publications and educational activities, which will highlight the quality of the artist’s painting, drawing and printmaking work. Based on the study of landscape geography and ecology, to draw attention to the values of Jambor's painterly work in relation to landscape ecology and topography, and to use them to assert the principles of ecological behaviour in the pursuit of sustainable development. In the context of contemporary art, to present the context, relations, the continuity of the classical landscape painting school and to open a debate on opposing tendencies. To collaborate with the Town of Tišnov in preserving Jambor's artistic legacy, in the efforts to safeguard it, present it to the public and disseminate new knowledge.
